Introduction to the study of midwifery through film

After meeting with Veronika and Ann in her office today, I found myself lacking in the information concerning midwifery, and the overall narrative of the regulation of midwifery in Ontario. Through work in previous courses, I have found the digital preservation and presentation of stories to be the most rewarding. So, in order to better build a website for the faculty to be used as a learning module, it is becoming necessary to dive deeper into the history.

Today I was entrusted with the DVD copies of the midwifery lectures that occurred at McMaster in December 2002. There are also a series of newspaper clippings that I will sign out for periods of a time out of the Midwifery Office in MDCL. I hope that through looking at this information I will be able to better understand the continued need for the preservation of midwifery.

I have already watched three of the lectures in order. Ivy, Reena, and Vicky. I found them informative, and yet moving at the same time. I took minimal notes about inquest dates, and meetings because Veronika has already undertaken the role of delving into a more in depth look at the context and an introduction of the videos. Also, I thought that it would be important to understand the story, and give myself a context from which to work and accurately portray the narrative of the regulation. I have come up with a few basic ideas for editing, but I will likely watch all footage for a second time with more interruptions to take more notes before fully editing.

Site ideas:
-incorporate newspaper sections as related material to videos being watched
-organized thematically, yet also can allow fuller information

To dos:
-ensure Veronika and I have each other's emails by the end of the day
-email Liss about more course related information/lab access
-email Ann about when will review articles
-contact the multimedia lab about when would be available to use video FCP in equipment.

Time:
20 mins: meeting with ann
80 mins: watching primary footage (Ivy, Reena, Vicky)
10 mins: journal entry
